The Hive

Purpose:

Due to an increased number of children presenting with SEMH needs, we decided to set up our own ‘in house’ SEMH provision in June 2024, known as ‘The Hive’.

Set up:

The Hive is run on a day-to-day basis by Miss Granger- HLTA and Miss Ahmet- TA. The Hive is overseen by Miss Wright- Inclusion Lead.

In the morning up to 6 children access the provision to complete their maths and English work in smaller groups (planned by the class teachers). They are also able to have sensory breaks and access the continuous provision throughout the morning. This has not only benefited the children in The Hive as they are now completing their maths and English work on a daily basis, but it is also enabling the rest of their class to access their learning without disruption.

On an afternoon, the Hive is open to 12 children at a time and they complete interventions based on life skills, friendship, confidence/ self-esteem, sensory circuits and emotions. These interventions change termly through discussions with The Inclusion Team and the rest of SLT, depending on what the current needs are.

Children in year 1 through to year 6 can access the provision. We do not offer children full time places as we still want them to feel a part of their class and be able to access support from the class teacher.

The Hive staff have raised money to create their own sensory room attached to the community room:

Once a term the Hive staff take the children on a trip to give them different life experiences. This term we went ice-skating at Planet Ice.

Next time, we are hoping to go to the fire station!
